PREPARING IMAGES FOR STUDY GROUP #8

1.       The image should be limited to a maximum of 500 pixels in either dimension and saved to JPG format at 72 dpi (this will keep the physical dimensions of the image within 7" X 7"). The file size should be within 75k. If you are using Photoshop, save the image at compression level 3, so it will load quickly on the web. Try making it as small as possible without sacrificing quality (You can easily get a good 6" X 6" net image less than 40k).

2.       Please send the image as an e-mail attachment and the write-up as part of the e-mail message (you can send separate thumbnail images in addition to your study image, showing how you created your image).

COMPRESSION TIPS

IMPORTANT – Please make all changes on a copy and not on your original image file. Note that repeated editing and saving of a JPG file degrades image quality, since jpg is a lossy compression format.

  1. Make sure your RGB image is 72 DPI and is flattened into one layer.
  2. In IMAGE SIZE make sure your image is no more than 7" X 7" (not necessarily square) and below 75k. Try to make your file as small as possible while still looking good.
  3. Do a “SAVE AS” and choose .jpg (with a quality setting of 1 to 3, if using Photoshop. Soft edged subjects can be OK at 1. Subjects with a lot of fine detail should be saved at quality 3). In Photoshop 5.5 and above, simply choose the “Save for Web” file option.
  4. OPEN the image and the check file size. It should be no more than 75k. Less than 40k would be nice. If it is too big go back to #2 and make your image smaller.

Please adhere to the DEADLINES:
